View family groups from various time periods and cultures on overhead.

Do a close reading as a class
Work individually on one painting. EQ: How do you conduct an interview?
Backpack - bring only five items (mementos, luxuries). Survival gear will be provided. Think - Pair - Share
Read and discuss "Reporting Silence" by Leslie Casimir p. 36-37
Name an event (p. 38) in your lives where you have little or no knowledge . Some examples: How did you get your name? Do you know the time, day, or place of your birth? Do you have scar for which you have no explanation? What are some family events that happend when you were a baby?
Write 5-7 questions to ask an immediate family member about the event.
Practice by performing a mock interview on an adult in the classroom. Students should write 1-2 questions to ask during the interview in class. Have students call out the questions as if you were in a press conference. Adult will answer questions just as they are written by the students. If question calls for a simple yes or not answer, respond accordingly.
What kids of answers did you receive? Could you restructure your questions to get a more in-depth answer?
Interview the family member about the event and write a summation of the interview.

Students need to remember to be reading their outside reading. We will have Sustained Silent Reading this Friday. Students with their books who read quietly receive a 100 participation grade that day.
Outside reading assignment (500 pages of new book and summer reading) is due Oct. 30. Make an appointment to see Ms. C during lunch or after school to do a 5 minute talk about your book. Sign up sheet posted by the door.
